I couldn't wait to read this book after listening to an interview with the author on a podcast. As I read, I began to dislike her as a person, she seems so shallow, self absorbed, at times, cruel. Yesterday I told my daughter that I disliked the author so much I didn't know if I could continue reading. I did finish the book hoping to find compassion and a love story amidst the tragedy of cancer. What I did find was an account written by a narcissist about how much this disease was changing her life. My heart broke for poor Jim as he battled a horribly painful cancer treatment while trying to keep up with her. I also felt so much sadness for his children, whom seem to be missing throughout his illness and at the end of his life. A very disturbing read that I won't so soon forget. I stopped reading this book about halfway through.Ms. Maynard reminds me of a close friend who goes through life like a whirling ball of self will run riot and too bad about all the bystanders. Reading about how she treated her husband during the initial part (pre-diagnosis) of their marriage is painful. Seriously painful. Reading, in her words, how she treated him, the things she said to him, and the way she was so different before they were married vice after. It must have been a nightmare.I also wonder about the account of their wedding, some of the accounts in the NYT Vows section (two suit cases versus three) are strange, but not as strange as relating the nightmare story about a man you went to Italy with (before you met your husband) to the NYT staff covering your wedding. It's embarrassing.To sum it up, if you want a book about Joyce Maynard and how she met and married her husband and quite a few excruciating stories that occurred before hand, this is your book. I deleted it from my Kindle, I just couldn't read another word.Hopefully she's a charming woman in person and maybe I just misunderstood her, bless her heart.
